My 5 reasons for Joining a PPA Local Photography Association….
My name is Paula Stanton and I’m a Wildlife Fine Art Photographer.
Five years ago, I decided to take my photography to a higher level. I wanted to explore my potential. I loved photographing weddings and did several over the years for friends. I loved using my photography skills at my job, a children’s hospital, so parents and families could enjoy the images of their children. I was passionate about wildlife photography and went out often to capture what nature had to offer. With all of this, however, I wanted more. I craved to improve my skill set.
I began researching photography organizations. For me, I knew I wanted to be a part of an organization that offered teaching, mentorship, socialization, workshops etc.. I was also interested in the business side of photography and wanted to learn about that as well. I quickly landed on PPA – Professional Photographers of America. I contacted them and they directed me to a local association near my home. I was thrilled.
I joined PPA Palm Beach in 2017 and I would like to share my experience. Over the last five years I have not only joined the group but have recently become a board member. Now, getting that involved is certainly not necessary but it does provide insight as to how involved I chose to become in my commitment. Here are five things I have experienced after being a part of this association:
1. Friendship. What a great perk. Yes, I joined to be a better photographer and I am improving every year. But, even more, the camaraderie and people I have had the pleasure of spending time with has been just as rewarding. In fact, after 5 years in the group, my friendship count still grows. It’s awesome.
2. Professional Work. As I stated, I was interested in the business of photography, and many of the members have become a great source of sharing and referring business. It has been a great learning ground and I am proud to say that I have been able to reciprocate and bring my colleagues on some of my own projects and jobs as well.
3. Focus. I was a renaissance woman. There is nothing wrong with that really, my interests are many and I enjoy many aspects of photography. However, to take things to the next level, focusing on/specializing in one aspect of photography will help tremendously in your artistic journey and improve your skill set. Be the best at one thing and own it. My journey continues and my focus has evolved.
4. Competition. Now, I have to say that that 5 years ago I had absolutely no interest in competition photography. However, in the last couple of years with this group, I have learned that this is an invaluable tool and learning experience to improve your skills. The better the image, the better the story. Putting my art in front of highly trained eyes and listening to the critiques can be brutal at times. But that’s how I learned. As the old saying goes “no pain, no gain” and this is no exception. For the past 2 competition seasons I came out the other side with more awareness and knowledge to take my images to higher level which, as the other saying goes is a “win, win” for both myself and my clients.
5. Technique. There are many avenues to explore in photography and the diversity of the group is what helps to become not only more focused but better technically. Learning about strobes, flash, modifiers, posing, natural light and the list goes on…only helps you practice the information you learned but also to become a better technician. That enables you to enhance your style, your vision and your art. You can’t be creative if your trying to figure out where the light should be or what F Stop to use. These things need to be second nature and being part of such a diverse group allows you to get a running start and not fumble as much. It’s still a bit intimidating, but it is easier to learn with others around to assist you and it is certainly more fun.
So, I hope these 5 reasons motivate you to reach out to your local PPA Association and give them a try. I have had a wonderful experience and my guess is that you will too. It takes work, you have to want it and you have to participate, but if you do the rewards can be more that you ever thought possible.
See you at the next meeting!
